After a lifetime in umpiring, this journey is a final trip through the game that has meant so much. Along the way, it’s a chance to say goodbye to baseball from the ballparks where it’s played every day.
But this trip also has a purpose beyond reflection. Across the country, veteran umpires are stepping away from the game faster than they are being replaced. By visiting fields and talking with those still working the game, this project aims to bring attention to the growing shortage of umpires.
Finally, the journey supports Umps Care, the charitable arm of Major League Baseball’s umpiring community, which works to improve the lives of children and families.
In the end, it’s about saying goodbye to the game, shining a light on its challenges, and giving something back.
